Ruby Throated Hummingbird in Acrylics

Enjoyed painting this one - everything just seems to work.
The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is the smallest bird that breeds in Eastern United States and Eastern Canada.  It measures only 7 - 9 cm in length and weighs between 2 - 6 grams.
Ruby Throated Hummingbird measures 8 x 10 inches and is painted on Fredrix Archival Watercolour Canvas Board.

Red Cardinal ACEO in acrylics

I love the red plumage of these birds - just a bit tricky to paint but I got there in the end.

The Northern Cardinal is a rather large, long tailed songbird and is found Northern America.  They
measure 21 - 23 cm in length and weigh between 42 - 48 grams.

Red Cardinal measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm Arches smooth watercolour paper.

Red Backed Fairy Wren ACEO in Acrylics

Also on my walk on Sunday, I  came across some Red Backed Fairy Wren's.  This little female sat for a while so I managed to take a few photos of her before she flew off.  I just love the position she is perched on the  branch.  Really pleased with the painting.

Red Backed Fairy Wren's are found in North and East Australia.  They are the smallest of the fairy wrens measuring  between 9 - 13 cm's of which 6 cm's is their tail.  They weigh on average 8 grams.

Red Backed Fairy Wren (Female) measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches Watercolour paper.

Sacred Kingfisher ACEO in Acrylics

The other day when driving,   two birds nearly flew into my car near the one lake in my area - fortunately they swerved in time.  I managed to see their colouring out the corner of my eye and they looked like sacred kingfishers.

I didn't realise they were in my area so on Sunday I went for a walk looking for birds.  I was really lucky -  I saw a bit of blue in a tree and zoomed in (thank goodness for 50x zoom cameras)  and it was the sacred kingfisher - I was so excited to see it and managed to take a few shots.

Fortunately the one photo was good enough to use as a reference.

Sacred Kingfishers are a medium size kingfisher found throughout the coastal areas of mainland Australia and parts of Tasmania.  They are also found on islands from Australasia to Indonesia and New Zealand.  They measure 19 - 24 cm in length and weigh on average 45 grams.

Sacred Kingfisher measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches Watercolour paper.

Ruby Crowned Kinglet in acrylics

I love how this little guy  is perched on the branch.

The Ruby Crowned Kinglet is found in  North America.  They are a tiny bird measuring only 9 - 11 cm in length and weight between 5 - 10 grams.  An interesting fact about this bird is that they can lay up to 12 eggs!! An entire clutch of eggs can weigh as much as the female.

Ruby Crowned Kinglet measures 6 x 6 inches and is painted on Raymar feather lite canvas panel.

Many thanks to Nigel for the reference photo.

Why not order your own SFA fine art prints? Now available ...

After initially opening a store on ImageKind in 2008, I'm now revitalizing this. My art has never been available as prints like this anywhere else. I think it's time to resurface.

ImageKind is a 'print-on-demand' online store where my art is on file so that you can choose what artwork YOU want - be it a simple, inexpensive, quality art print on paper, all the way up to framed and matted art that is perfect for where you choose to display it.

ImageKind has been around for quite a while (mid 2000s I think - a CafePress Division), and comes with extensive experience and professional help for online buyers.

Thank you for your support of my art.

10th in an art series - ACEO (SFA) "gardens" Birdhouses. Pen & wash.

Original painting - ACEO (2.5x3.5") - SFA - Small Format Art (Any artwork not over 14"). "Birdy Condo"

"Original unique artwork. I love and collect old papers, but there are so many wonderful things to do with them. This is a genuine 1887 handwritten ledger page, backed with acid-free cardstock. Some of the original handwriting appears on the vintage paper.

On top I've done some pen and wash paintings/sketches from my photos of gardens and other delights.

A weathered birdhouse condominium-style by the Oregon coast. A scattering of pink roses trailing over the sides of it. I don't know if birds like to live condo-style, but it sure looks great in the garden with salt-weathered wood.

I've used white gesso under some of the painting - as this helps to make the colors 'pop' a little more. This is the same type of sketching used in art journals, urban sketches, and travel diaries.

P.S. For locals that may like to guess. This is in Charleston, OR.
Hope you enjoy these as much as I have in discovering these wonderful gardens, and creating these little paintings."
